Most of us do not think of mentioning chronic headaches to the dentist, but they can often be related to an undiagnosed dental problem or bite disorder. This is especially true of patients who wake up with a headache, which may be accompanied by neck, ear or jaw pain. In many cases, patients are grinding their teeth during sleep unknowingly and creating tension in the jaw joints which contributes to headaches and pain in and around the jaw. Teeth grinding and jaw clenching are also common signs of a bite disorder.
A graduate of the Dawson Academy, Dr. Amy Mandalia has extensive training and experience in diagnosing complex dental problems. She offers treatment to both restore dental health and relieve painful symptoms such as frequent headaches at her Buckhead dentist office. She will thoroughly evaluate your entire occlusal system to look for signs of imbalance and dysfunction that can cause a bite disorder and associated symptoms.
Treating Headaches with Dentistry
Dr. Mandalia will discuss your dental concerns and health history as well as perform a thorough dental exam before recommending appropriate treatment for TMJ related headaches. Treatment options include an oral appliance, such as a TMJ mouthguard, and/or bite correction therapy to address problems with the alignment of teeth and TMJ joints.
- Mouthguard/Nightguard – A custom removable appliance that is worn during sleep or stressful situations to reduce or prevent teeth grinding and clenching.
- Bite Correction Therapy – Dr. Mandalia may recommend a series of adjustment procedures to bring the teeth into proper alignment. This type of treatment may also include reshaping the teeth, orthodontics, and restorative dentistry (crowns, bridges or implants).
