What is Gum Disease?
Gum Disease (periodontal disease) is the inflammation of gums (gingivitis), which eventually causes gum, teeth and oral bone tissue deterioration.
Causes of Gum Disease
The main cause of gum disease is excess plaque build-up. Eating or drinking foods that contain starch or sugar will cause bacteria to build up on your teeth. The bacteria release acids that attach the tooth enamel; this leads to gingivitis (gum inflammation). When gingivitis turns into an infection, it destroys the gum tissue and breaks down the bones in the mouth. The result is tooth decay or tooth loss.
This is why it is crucial to brush your teeth no less than twice a day and floss at least once a day.
Signs of Gum Disease and How to Prevent It
Common signs of gum disease are:
Bad breath (halitosis)
Red, swollen or sore gums
Mouth sores or pus between gums and teeth

Caffeine and tobacco products will damage your teeth. Reduce your caffeine intake and quit tobacco usage. Your mouth and body will thank you!
